It would not be uncharacteristic for this new model to sell out in the first few days of its launch and that is exactly what happened in Nigeria when it was unveiled there at the start of June.

To get a feel of what this new offering is all about, let us delve down to the specifics starting from the front working around to the back in no particular order

Infinix Zero 2 X509

The display is 5 inches in size for a smartphone which also measures an impressive 6.7 mm on the sides. Both the front and the back are designed to be completely flat in this chocolate- bar shaped device. To further add impetus to the refinement that has gone into the form factor, its weight has been kept low at 118 grams.

The resolution on the AMOLED display is 720p. This promises to deliver high quality graphics considering the healthy pixel population of 294 ppi. Additionally, there’s the reinforced 0.55 mm layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to act as a defense against damage.

As opposed to the toughened glass back of last year’s model, this latest Infinix Zero 2 X509’s back has been made even stronger. It has been fashioned from Kevlar, a synthetic fiber that is said to tolerate five times more strain than steel. It is the kind of stuff whose other applications include manufacturing body armor like combat helmets and ballistic vests. Smartphone manufacturers particularly prefer it because it does not interfere with signal transmission.

Infinix Zero 2 X509 runs on Android 4.4.2 which is a major drawback for a smartphone that is launching halfway through the year 2015 when everyone else is moving to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The only thing that is new in terms of software is the Infinix user interface version 2.0 that improves on icon design.

This is a twin SIM device and the slots are located inside a retractable tray on the left hand side. The memory card tray is located on the right hand side, above the volume rocker and the power button. Both trays will require you to use an ejection pin to draw them out. Luckily, it is part of the package.

The processor is a powerful MTK6592 2.0 GHz octa- core chip that is complemented by 2GB of RAM. This will deliver great satisfaction when indulging in gaming, streaming and multimedia viewing activities.

The primary camera is a 13 megapixel shooter with LED while the secondary snapper at the front has an 85- degree wide angle lens for great group selfies. Since standard storage is 32GB, there will be plenty of room to store the pictures away for review. That is, the 2, 300 mAh battery permitting.

Pricing

Infinix Zero 2 X509 is not yet available in Kenya. We estimate a starting price ofKES. 19, 000 -KES. 20, 499 at launch.

KRA wins an Award at the African Public Service Day in Brazzaville

KRA showcased iTax as an innovation under the sub-theme “Innovations in Public Service Performance towards Accessible and Effective Service Delivery” where they scooped the award. In the adjudication, the judges focused on amongst other criteria, the uniqueness of the idea, its ability to be replicated in other African countries, its impact in public service delivery and the delivery of the innovation by the delegates. In this category, Congo Customs came in second place and Burkina Faso the third with an innovation on centralized online citizen folder documentation.

KRA’s Commissioner General, John Njiraini was thrilled at the news saying that automation of processes was key in enhancing service delivery to the public. “We at KRA are honoured by the recognition by our peers. Our commitment is to simplify and enhance trust between the Authority and taxpayers as we transition to a service oriented culture powered by technology. The role of iTax system in empowering Kenya cannot be underestimated and it is hoped that Africa will one day be recognized on the international stage as a leader in technological advancements following such influences.” said Mr. Njiraini.

iTax was successfully launched in October 2013, as part of KRA’s modernization reforms aimed at enhancing service delivery to the public. iTax is expected to revolutionize tax administration in the country by enhancing revenue collection while sealing gaps that cause revenue losses.  The system provides an integrated view of a taxpayer making it easier for taxpayers to access various tax administration services from anywhere at any time of day. The system enables taxpayers to update their registration details, file returns, conveniently pay their taxes through mobile payment services (M-Pesa, Airtel Money), enquire about tax status, apply for Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) and lodge refund claims online in real time, just to name a few.

In addition, KRA is now able to identify taxpayers who have traded within the period 2014/2015 and who have either not filed returns or filed NIL returns.

KRA is currently riding on its success in registering 2 million taxpayers on the iTax platform in the just concluded tax filing season and has announced an achievement of the Kshs. 1 trillion revenue mark for 2014/2015 fiscal year. The iTax system has in the recent past received interest from revenue authorities in Tanzania, Liberia, Ghana and Lesotho Revenue Authorities who have sent delegations to KRA to interact with various officials and learn from their experiences. The power of the system is therefore widely acknowledged and appreciated.

Safaricom Starts a New Data Bundles Rollover After Scrapping Night bundles

0

Safaricom has announced a new data bundle plan that eliminates night bundles and allows customers to roll over their unused balance.

Customers used to get a 100 per cent increase on the amount of data bundles bought for use at night (called night shift bundles). This will be scrapped today at tonight.

Consumers will now buy and use their daily bundles within 24 hours.

Users will also be able to extend the validity period of their unused data bundles by renewing them.

A customer who has bought a 7MB daily bundle and uses 5MBs can buy another daily bundle and carry over the remaining 2MBs into the new validity period of one day.

Consumers had complained that they were not able to use all their bundles based on the existing conditions.

The new validity period will apply only for customers who make renewals before the earlier bundle expires.

“We have listened to our customers and we have made a relevant response. This is completely a new era in our data segment,” said Safaricom Chief Executive Bob Collymore.

Safaricom has been facing growing complaints from consumers over the validity period of their Internet bundles at a time when the government is pushing for the breakup of the company through a dominance Bill on its way to Parliament.

Mr Collymore, however, said the Bill would kill innovation and stop expansion.

Facebook to to Pay Video creators

0

Facebook is to start paying some video creators for uploading their clips to the platform.

The company is launching a Suggested Videos feed that curates a sequence of clips, interspersed with adverts.

Videos that keep people watching for longer will earn a greater share of the revenue from these ads, with Facebook keeping 45% for itself.

Facebook says its users clock up four billion video views daily. One expert said it posed a threat to YouTube.

“Facebook is aggressively moving into the video space,” said Eleni Marouli, advertising analyst at IHS consultancy.

“In December 2014, Facebook surpassed YouTube in views for the first time, and we predict YouTube will lose share from next year onwards.”

In June, US broadcaster HBO announced it would stream some of its programmes on Facebook.

Offering a cash incentive could encourage more publishers to upload on the platform.

While YouTube gives content creators 55% of the revenue from ads displayed before their videos, Facebook will split the 55% it is offering between several creators.

“It’s not an unusual, or generous model,” said Ms Marouli. “But we could see a monetisation battle between Facebook and YouTube, to entice creators onto the platform.”

Facebook made $3.3bn (£2.1bn) in ad revenue in the first quarter of 2015, 73% of it from mobile ads.

“Facebook is very adaptable,” said Ms Marouli. “In 2012, they had zero mobile-ad revenue. In two years, they’ve raised that to over 60% of their ad income.

“Based on our forecasts, by 2018 Facebook will have 25% of online video ad revenue in Europe, and more in the US,” said Ms Marouli.

'Sin free Facebook' Launched

A group of Evangelical Christians in Brazil has launched a social network where swearing and erotic content in any form is completely banned.

The creators of Facegloria claim the site has attracted 100,000 members since its launch last month.

There are 600 words which are forbidden on the site and an “Amen” button for expressing appreciation for a post.

Ummaland, a social network for Muslims which launched in 2013, currently has around 329,000 members.

It includes “extended privacy settings” for women and daily Islamic inspirational quotes.

“On Facebook you see a lot of violence and pornography. That’s why we thought of creating a network where we could talk about God, love and to spread His word,” web designer Atilla Barros told AFP.

Developer Terry Davis spent ten years building his publicly available Christian operating system, TempleOS, which is full of Biblical quotes and references.

“TempleOS is God’s official temple. Just like Solomon’s temple, this is a community focal point where offerings are made and God’s oracle is consulted,” reads the operating system’s charter.

What Does Your Phone Say About You? Infinix Rising Star

0

In this fast-paced, technology saturated present times, you are not only judged by what you wear, what you say, but also by the type of phone you use. The kind of gadget you possess dictates to a large extent how others will socialize with you.

Take for instance, a guy wants to ask a lovely lady out for dinner. Once this dude has the lady’s number, he will not only be expected to call her, but to whatsapp, follow on Instagram or use Facebook and Twitter to interact with her. Now, if the poor guy uses a Nokia 3310, the deal is as good as over. While on the other hand if he owns an Infinix Hot Note X551, he wouldn’t even have to stress two muscles.

‘Swag’ in the modern world is associated with owning worthy gadgets like Infinix Hot Note X551, Samsung galaxy S6, Huawei P8 and/or the Infinix X509. You are not counted urban and trendy until your phone dictates so, it speaks for you.

Of course a person’s income would determine the type of phone they use. On a salary of ka-twenty thousand a month, you surely wouldn’t own an Iphone 6, unless you won it, or have some other believable explanation. This largely explains why people conclude you are not well off if you are walking around with a Bird, Itel or Wing phone. You hold such phones and go knock at any office door and they already think you are looking for a job.

I know of old people ( and here I mean age 50 plus) who own feature phones and don’t really care. They are allowed. But if you are not old and tired it is not acceptable that you to walk around with an old and tired phone.

So yeah, things are different. Society has shifted. We’ll conclude about your social status, lifestyle and age depending on which phone you flash out to receive that call, text or reply to that email.

May your phone speak honestly of you.

Kenya Airways Technical gets international recognition as a maintenance centre

Kenya Airways Technical has become an Embraer Authorised Service Centre (EASC), the first in Sub-Saharan Africa and the 10th in the world, a move that will see Kenya Airways Technical offer maintenance to Embraer’s global network of aircraft operators at its Nairobi base.

Embraer is one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers in the world, based out of Sao Paulo, in Brazil.

Kenya Airways has the largest Embraer fleet in Africa having operated and maintained the jets since 2007. Currently the airline has 15 E190s in its fleet.

Kenya Airways’ Group Managing Director and CEO Mbuvi Ngunze said the recognition is in line with the airline’s Technical department ambition to become the Centre Of Engineering and Maintenance Excellence.

“This is a major recognition for us as it creates a platform for further growth as a maintenance and repair services provider and will drive revenue,” he said during the certification ceremony held at KQ’s head quarter in Embakasi.

The Embraer authorization follows Kenya Airways Technical department approval by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in May 2015. By attaining EASA Certification, Kenya Airways has demonstrated high standards of maintenance and will enable Kenya Airways to carry out carry out maintenance for European carriers and their affiliates on Boeing and Embraer Manufactured Aircrafts.

Kenya Airways Technical boasts a range of engineering and maintenance capabilities covering aircraft and aircraft components. It is also ISO17025 Accredited and offers Calibration services for precision Tooling and Equipment. These services are also offered to other carriers within Kenya, Africa and beyond.

Most recently it has scooped top awards at the Africa Investor (Ai) Tourism Investor Awards and was declared the Business Airline of the Year in Africa. Kenya Airways takes pride for being in the forefront of connecting Africa to the World and the World to Africa through its hub at the new ultra-modern Terminal 1A at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Facebook changed its logo yesterday, who noticed??

0

Facebook asked Eric Olson, the designer of Klavika, the font used for the original wordmark, to design a new typeface.

Ben Barry, a former designer at Facebook, had also proposed tweaks to the Facebook wordmark in 2012 which were approved by the company but never implemented.

The actual Facebook ‘F’ logo isn’t being changed. You’ll only notice the difference where the full name is used.

When Facebook’s logo was first created in 2005, the company was just getting started and we wanted the logo to feel grown up and to be taken seriously. Now that we are established, we set out to modernize the logo to make it feel more friendly and approachable. While we explored many directions, ultimately we decided that we only needed an update, and not a full redesign. We worked with Eric Olson — whose typeface Klavika was used in the original logo — and developed a custom typeface to reflect where we are now and where we are headed.
