How to unsend an email in Gmail

0

We’ve had the ability to “unsend”
emails in Gmail for about six
years now, but the feature was
somewhat hidden in the obscure
Labs section of Gmail’s settings.
Google officially announced on
Tuesday that “undo send” is an
option in its Gmail service, and
it’s much easier to find in Gmail’s
settings.
Before digging around the
settings to enable undo send, you
need to reload Gmail, otherwise
you won’t find the feature.
Then click the gear icon on the
top left of your inbox, and click
Settings in the menu that pops
up.
You’ll be taken to the general
settings in the “General” tab.
Look/scroll down to find the undo
send feature, and click the box to
enable it.
It’s set to let you unsend an email
for 10 seconds by default, but you
can lengthen and shorten the
send cancellation period from 5,
10, 20, or 30 seconds.
Next time you send an email,
you’ll notice a subtle new “undo”
option in the yellow box that
appears at the top of the Gmail
window after you send an email.
If you realized you missed
something or notice a typo in
your email, click the “undo” link,
and your email will reopen in the
“compose email” box for you to
edit.
Unfortunately, there’s no such
option in the iOS or Android
Gmail mobile apps where small
mobile device keyboards means
our emails are more prone to
mistakes.

Baidu to Launch a Driverless Car

0

The Chinese web giant Baidu has announce the  launch of  its first driverless car in the second half of 2015.It had previously said it was working on such a car but did not say when it would be available. The news, reported by Chinese language website TechWeb, will put it head to head with rival Google. The firm will work with an unnamed car manufacturer, according to Baidu’s senior vice president Jin Wang.

He made the announcement at the China Cloud Computing conference.

The firm has previously teamed up with BMW to develop semi-autonomous car technology.

The head of Baidu’s deep learning lab Yu Kai has previously told the press that the firm does not agree with Google’s view of a completely autonomous car, looking instead to develop a vehicle that will retain the traditional pedals but give the driver greater freedom.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a key battleground for tech firms, with self-driving cars seen as one of the first practical applications for the technology.

Baidu’s rise in the field of artificial intelligence suffered a setback last week when Stanford University -which runs an AI test to see whether computers can recognise and sort images – banned Baidu from competing for the next year.

The web giant was stripped of its 2015 title after it emerged that it broke the rules over how many tests it could run.

Google announced last month that its prototype self-driving cars would take to the public roads this summer around its headquarters in Mountain View, California.

It also recently revealed that its cars had been involved in 13 minor accidents over the six years of tests.

How they see the market evolving: Gradually. Most car makers are adding driverless features, such as parking assist, lane centering and intelligent cruise control, starting with higher-end models. The companies see driverless cars remain in private ownership, with consumers retaining some control over the vehicle. They’ll work best on highways, initially.

Anti-virus software Provider, Kaspersky, System Hacked

0

One of the leading anti-virus software providers has revealed that its own systems were recently compromised by hackers.

Kaspersky Lab said that it had detected the breach in the “early spring”, and described it as “one of the most sophisticated campaigns ever seen”.

The malware does not write any files to disk, but instead resides in affected computers’ memory, making it relatively hard to detect.

Kaspersky linked the attack to the unidentified creators of an earlier Trojan named Duqu, which made headlines in 2011 after being used in attacks on Iran, India, France and Ukraine.

As before, the hackers are said to have exploited Microsoft software to achieve their goal.

Last time they made use of a flaw in Word.

This time, Kaspersky said, the malware was spread using Microsoft Software Installer files, which are commonly used by IT staff to install programs on remote computers.

“This highly sophisticated attack used up to three zero-day [previously unknown] exploits, which is very impressive – the costs must have been very high,” commented Costin Raiu, director of Kaspersky Lab’s global research and analysis team.

He warned that the firm had evidence “Duqu 2.0” attacks had also been made on other targets, including several venues used for talks between Iran and the West about Iran’s nuclear programme.

The chief research officer of a rival computer security firm said he had had only a brief chance to look into the allegations, but added that it did appear to be a “big deal”.

“Duqu 2.0 seems to be the biggest [cybersecurity] news of the year so far – it’s major new malware from a major source,” said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure.

“But we have previously seen security companies used as a way to reach other targets.

“The prime example of this was RSA, which got hacked four years ago, when we believe the target was a defence contractor in the US, which used RSA’s technology.”

Kaspersky said that it was “confident” that its clients and partners remained safe.

U.S. Army Website Hacked and Defaced by Syrian Electronic Army

0

The US army has temporarily taken down its website after a hacking attack.

It says an element of the army.mil website was compromised and preventative measures had to be taken to ensure there was no breach of data.

The Syrian Electronic Army – which supports President Bashar al-Assad – says it was behind the attack. They left the message:

“Your commanders admit they are training the people they have sent you to die fighting”

Last week, the US said Chinese hackers had attacked federal government computers and may have compromised the records of four million employees.

China denied any involvement and called the allegations “not responsible, and counterproductive”.

‘Enormous vulnerabilities’

On Monday, US Brig Gen Malcolm Frost, the chief of the army public affairs, said “the army took appropriate preventive measures to ensure there was no breach of army data by taking down the website temporarily”.

Screen grabs posted on social media earlier showed messages on the website.

One of them read: “Your commanders admit they are training the people they have sent you to die fighting.”

The army.mil website is the shop front for the US military, and having to take it offline is embarrassing, the BBC’s Gary O’Donoghue in Washington reports.

It comes just five months after US Central Command had to temporarily close its YouTube and Twitter accounts after what was described at the time as cyber vandalism – with pro-Islamic State messages being posted.

Earlier in the year, US President Barack Obama acknowledged that the nation and the economy faced enormous vulnerabilities from such attacks. – BBC

Silk Road Drug Marketplace Founder Sentenced to Life in Prison Without Parole

0

The convicted mastermind behind the world’s largest online narcotics emporium has been sentenced by a federal judge to two terms of life in prison and three lesser sentences, USA Today reports.

The judge also ordered Ross Ulbricht, 31, to forfeit $184 million dollars. The website made over $187 million before it was shut down in 2013.

The government estimated that roughly $1.2 billion in illegal drug transactions took place on Silk Road.

The judge said it was a “demand expanding operation” and that what Ulbricht did was thoughtful, as opposed to just being an economic experiment. She added that he often referred to it as his life’s work and a worldwide criminal enterprise.

“Silk Road was about creating demand and fulfilling demand,” the judge said. “You don’t fit the criminal profile” — noting that he was well educated — “but you are a criminal.”

“I don’t know that you feel a lot of remorse,” the judge added. “I don’t think you know that you hurt a lot of people.”

Ulbricht’s defense team said it would seek an appeal, Wired reports, noting that two DEA agents on the case allegedly stole bitcoin used to make payments on the site.

Ulbricht’s lawyer called life sentence “unreasonable, unjust, unfair.”

Ulbricht faced anywhere from 20 years to life in prison for his role in running Silk Road under the pseudonym “Dread Pirate Roberts,” a reference to the cult classic “Princess Bride.”

Ulbricht was convicted in February of all seven counts, including trafficking drugs on the internet, narcotics-trafficking conspiracy, running a continuing criminal enterprise, computer-hacking conspiracy, and money-laundering conspiracy, according to Bloomberg.

“I’m not the man I was when I created Silk Road,” Ulbricht told the court before the sentencing. “I wish I could go back and convince myself to take a different path.”

Parents of drug-overdose victims reportedly spoke before sentencing, and Ulbricht started crying as he apologized.

“I never wanted that to happen,” he said.

Last week, Ulbricht and 97 of his friends and relatives wrote letters to US Judge Katherine Forrest pleading for the most lenient sentence possible — in this case, 20 years.

Google Maps to include offline search and navigation

0

In keeping with Sundar Pichai’s grand theme of services available to all, Google is today announcing offline search in its Maps application along with offline turn-by-turn voice navigation instructions. Aimed to help users in developing countries where access to data is either spotty, expensive, or both, the new features will let people use Google’s services even when they don’t have “super reliable connectivity.”

The new offline functionality is coming to Google Maps later this year, joining the YouTube Offline option (available in India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam) that allows you to download and keep YouTube videos on your device for up to 48 hours. And just to round things off, Google’s making big strides in optimizing data usage in its Chrome web browser as well, claiming it can now reduce data consumption by as much as 80 percent
