Pwani University began as Kilifi Institute of Agriculture in 1984 though the first intake of 200 students for the Two Year Certificate Course in Agriculture and Home Economics was in July 1987. By 2007, Kilifi Institute of Agriculture had graduated 3,837 students. The Institute also hosted a number of Masters and PhD research students from other national universities. On 23rd August 2007, Kilifi Institute of Agriculture was upgraded to a Constituent College of Kenyatta University, and in March 2013, it was given a charter as a full- fledged University. It is strategically placed in the heart of the Coastal region of Kenya in Kilifi Town, right on the Mombasa-Malindi Highway; and is equipped with facilities to offer quality training in Tropical Agriculture, Tropical Medicine, Marine Sciences and Education”

SCHOOL OF PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCE

The school of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) is among the first school to be created after the launch of the university in 2007.  The Dean of school is Prof. Paul Guyo.

Members of staff in SPAS are involved in various research projects some of which are internationally funded and others are funded by nationally and regional research and development institutions. These projects are in collaborations with institutions such as: Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI-Wellcome Trust, Kilifi), Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA), Technical University of Mombasa ,Egerton University, University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia among others.

    The School of Education is headed by Dr. Jacinta S.A. Kwena. The school offers programs in Administration, Planning and Management of Education, Curriculum Development, Education Economics and the Philosophy of Educational Foundations. In the recent past the school has reviewed and reorganized the curriculums in harmony with curriculum offered by the service departments and other schools. All the four departments linked together provide the programs leading to Doctorate of philosophy, masters, Undergraduate Diploma and certificate in fields related to education.

    Staff and students persuing post graduate studies in the school are engaged in various research studies currently going on with an aim of addressing the challenges facing the education sector and the learners unique for the region and the country at large.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements

Minimum of Mean grade C+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) or equivalent qualifications

Postgraduate Entry Requirements

Masters Degree

A holder of a Bachelors degree with a minimum of Second Class Honours Upper Division or its equivalent in the relevant discipline, from a recognised institution.

Doctoral Degree

A holder of a Masters degree from a recognized institution in an area or subject relevant to the proposed area of study

Accommodation & Meals:

Due to limitation in bed space, accommodation in campus is reserved to Government sponsored students i.e the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) students. This is allocated on first-come –first- served basis. In the event of availability of accommodation space due to a JAB student wanting to stay out of campus, then that is when a Self Sponsoring student can be allocated accommodation.

Students are however charged as follows:

  • Kshs.3,500 per semester for a student taking studies under the full- time mode and Kshs.1,500 for a student under the Institutional/ School-Based mode.
  • The university is assisted in accommodating students by external/private landlords who charge between Kshs.1,500 and Kshs.2,500 per month.

Pwani University College has a catering department which offers services to students on Pay -As- You -Eat system.

Tuition:

Tuition at Pwani University is semesterised depending on mode of study as follows:

  • For the Full-Time mode, the first semester starts around late August for freshers while the continuing group reports early September of every calendar year and the semester ends in early December.

Second Semester starts in January and ends late March.
Students go for their long holidays starting from April and end around August.

  • The Institutional/ School Based Mode‘s Tuition is split into three sessions for each academic year.

The first Session is normally held in December of each calendar year while the second and third sessions are held in April and August of each year respectively.

Other Fees:

In addition to the Tuition and statutory fees, students whose programs have Teaching Practice or Attachment component are expected to register for these components in order to fulfill the requirements of the programs as indicated below:
