Kenya Army Salary Scales
A lot of military information all over the world is always classified, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) not exceptional.
However, the amount of money Kenyan soldiers serving has been revealed
After the European Union cut its funding to AMISOM by 20 percent early this year, the mission receives €20 million (Sh224 Million) every month.
The funds are meant to pay the troops monthly stipends at $1,028 (Sh103, 828) a month.
A Kenya Defence Forces soldier, however, takes home $828 (Sh83,628) after an administration fee of $200 (Sh20,200) is deducted by the government.
What is not clear is whether the AMISOM’s earnings are separate from the usual salary soldiers receive in their respective countries.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the salaries could go up following a recent deal between the EU and the African Union.
The EU agreed to settle Sh20 billion in troops allowances for between January-September 2016.
The mission in Somalia requires about $300 Million (Sh30.2 Billion) for its entire operations.
Ranks in Kenya Defence Force (KDF) and Salaries
According to the 2011 salary structure which excluded allowances, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) was entitled to Sh894,897, Lieutenant-Generals receive Sh632,984 while brigadiers are paid Sh171,509.
Colonels get a monthly pay of Sh153,317, Lt-Colonels Sh130,735, Majors Sh102,106 and Captains Sh73,182. A Corporal receives Sh32,250, Lance Corporals get Sh26,509 and Privates Sh19,941.
KDF Allowances
A new recruit can expect to earn Sh7,172. The most junior officer – a cadet – starts at Sh11,852 while an Officer Cadet who has served three years earns Sh24,520 in allowances.
