The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Tuesday announced the recruitment of 5,000 new teachers to address the shortage in the education sector.

TSC chief executive officer Nancy Macharia, in a statement, said qualified teachers who are registered by TSC have until July 31 to submit their applications.

Teachers’ union leaders put the shortage of teachers in the country at 80,000 and have been demanding more allocations to the education sector for the recruitment of more tutors. This financial year the government allocated Sh2.3 billion to the recruitment of 5,000 teachers while Sh2 billion was set aside for promotions.

Last year the government recruited a similar number of teachers, 2,479 went to primary schools while 2,521 were deployed to secondary schools.

On Tuesday, Mrs Macharia said that out of the 5,000 teachers that who be recruited 2,338 will be for primary schools while 2,662 will be deployed to secondary schools.

Those who wish to apply for the jobs, she added, must be Kenyans, aged 45 and below and in possession of professional and academic certificates.

New merit list

“Applicants applying for posts in primary schools must be holders of P1 certificate. They should apply to TSC county directors, in the county where a vacancy has been advertised, and submit relevant academic and professional documents,” said Mrs Macharaia.

Those who had applied earlier and were unsuccessful must apply afresh since a new merit list for the 2015/2016 financial year will be released.

Mrs Macharia said that those applying for posts in post primary institutions must be holders of a minimum of a diploma in education and such application should be addressed to the secretary, board of management of schools or institution where the vacancy has been advertised and submit a copy to the TSC county director.

The TSC boss encouraged those with disabilities to apply saying that the commission is an unbiased employer.

She also cautioned against applications to TSC saying that the commission will only deal with county selection panels and boards of management.
Mrs Macharia assured candidates that the recruitment exercise will be free and fair.

“The TSC would wish to forewarn applicants against fraudsters who might extort money from unsuspecting persons purporting to assist in recruitment.
